This was the first time I’ve ever worked in Google Documents. At first I thought it was going to be great, a real asset to anyone that doesn’t have Microsoft Office. I found it a bit cumbersome and I didn’t like it too much. Maybe I’m just too used to Office. I also don’t like the fact that I would need to have internet access all the time. I don’t always work in areas that have internet so sometimes I want to work offline. I asked some of my coworkers about their experience with it and they said that they’ve had problems opening the documents sent to them by students and making comments on them for grading. They weren’t fans. All in all, I think it’s ok for a student that really has no other choice or for collaboration, but as a general rule- I don’t think I’d make it a practice to use this technology. I understand what you mean about having access to the internet. Monday and Tuesday this week I was in a hotel with very slow internet access. It really put me back with my assignments this week in my other classes. It took forever for my pages to load. I also had trouble navigating docs.

I really like the idea of Google Docs. I also think it is a great collaboration tool. I wish I had known about it at the end of last semester. My co-workers and I had a document that we all had to add information to. We received the document by email with a list of recipients. When we had completed our part, we forwarded it to the next recipient. A Google Doc would have worked nicely in this situation. My first thought was this will be great for the classroom too, and I do still think it may be a little more effective than requiring students to have Microsoft Office on their personal computers. After reading your post about the problems you have encountered and the fact that you don’t always have an internet connection, I gave it more thought. We have three main campuses at my school. I work on the campus near Biloxi, Mississippi. My students usually don’t have trouble locating internet access. However, some of my students, especially online students, come from the other main campuses which are in more rural areas. Many of these students don’t have access to high-speed internet at home. This will make it hard for these students to access Google Docs outside of class. I guess that this example illustrates just how hard it is to accommodate all students. I can now see the need to provide different types of learning material to cover content in my class.
